Summary

According to the Alzheimer’s Society (www.Alzheimer’s.org.uk), there are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2025. This will soar to 2 million by 2051. In fact, 225,000 will develop dementia this year, that’s one every three minutes. (Source: BBC)

If you’re involved with a sufferer, you owe it to them and to yourself to study this course. If you have concerns for an elderly friend or relative, it will help you gain a real understanding of the condition.

Course Outline

In the summer of 2014, David Cameron (the then UK Prime Minister) told a summit of 300 experts who have pledged to find a cure by 2025 that, “Dementia is one of the greatest enemies of humanity”. He said that a “big, global push” is needed to defeat Dementia, and that, “It is important to see dementia as a disease and one that we need to better understand so that we can tackle it.”

The British government has pledged over £300 million for research into the disease and has announced that all NHS staff will receive specialist Dementia training.

Dementia must certainly be taken seriously, and anyone who has had contact with friends or loved ones suffering from it clearly understands how devastating it is.

One of the major initiatives in the care sector has been the development of protocols to deal appropriately with sufferers, and this course in Person-Centred Dementia Care is an ideal introduction.

The course covers brain function, and the way in which memory works. It helps students understand the challenging behaviours and emotions that often distress those closest to the sufferer. It also helps promote the application of person-centred principles to routine care activities.

Whether you want to work with Dementia sufferers as a health professional, need to understand the condition better as part of your CPD (Continuing Professional Development), or simply want to be prepared to help your own relatives and friends in the future, then this course is for you.
