ENDORSED QUALIFICATION AT LEVEL 3

Do you want to make a difference and follow a highly rewarding and fulfilling new career at the same time? Do you have a passion to help those who are seen to be different?

Many children in mainstream schools have problems with some aspect of learning, through physical impairment, speech difficulty or conditions such as dyslexia to name but a few. These conditions require specialist support from a qualified practitioner.

Accredited through the Focus Awards Focus on Quality Provision (FQP) Scheme, our SEN Teaching Assistant Course offers you the opportunity to help children with Special Educational Needs in the classroom. As a SEN Teaching Assistant your role can be crucial in providing focused support to both teachers and pupils.

As demand for SEN teaching assistants is at an all-time high, this course is perfect for the enthusiastic person seeking to make a worthwhile contribution.

The SEN Teaching Assistant course is comprised of 22 distinct units, which are detailed on the ‘Snapshot’ tab above. The course opens with a discussion, which delineates what we mean by “Special Educational Needs”, introduces the SEN Code of Practice 2001, and outlines what qualities are desirable in a Teaching Assistant.

The course looks at policy surrounding special needs provision and the core practices involved in teaching and working with children. You will learn the supporting role of the SEN classroom assistant with regard to classroom practices, specifically how teachers plan and prepare lessons, deliver their subject matter, and assess students. There is even a section on the SEN reforms planned for 2014.

At the core of the role of the practitioner is the support of pupils with disabilities and special educational needs. These units are tailored to give students competence in identifying pupils with special needs and learning difficulties, while at the same time providing a comprehensive understanding of the issues and subjects related to the support of children in education.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

While there are no set requirements for this course, it would be advantageous to have an interest in education and in working with children. The ability to work as part of a team, the qualities of tact and sensitivity, a responsible attitude and a good deal of patience are desirable attributes if you wish to pursue a career in this specialism.

The course materials are laid out in an understandable format. You will also be supported by a tutor and you will receive a comprehensive study guide to help you through this period of learning.

You should take note that in order to work in a school environment, or indeed any other organisation that involves access to children, you may be required to undergo a Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check.
